Footnotes

Magu is a Daoist immortal associated with longevity. She is closely associated with nature and is often portrayed with a deer, lingzhi fungus, and in the company of Shoulao, all symbols of longevity. Such motifs are called Magu xian shou (Magu offers longevity) and were popular birthday motifs from late Imperial times until present.
