A soapstone figure of a luohan

Early Qing Dynasty
The Buddhist disciple carved seated in the position of royal ease, holding a bowl in his left hand, wearing a long hooded cloak decorated with wave incised borders and a cloud pattern, opened to reveal his bony chest, his curly hair, eyebrows and facial hair pointing to his foreign origins, affixed to a base carved in the form of an elongated quatrefoil cushion with lotus and foliate scroll borders, remnants of an old inventory label affixed to the bottom, the details highlighted with gilt and pigment, fitted box.
