Footnotes
A brushpot with a scholar in a similar pose is illustrated by Simon Kwan in Ming and Qing Bamboo, Hong Kong, 2000, no. 33, pp 212 - 213, where the author notes that bamboo brushpots with the figures in low relief against a plain background was popular until the Kangxi period, after which more complex designs came into vogue. Another example of a bushpot executed in a similar style with similar subject matter, but dated 1705, is illustrated in Splenders of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1992, no. 257, p. 391.
