Footnotes
Depicting bats, fish, dragons and lions against a ground of churning waves was a popular motif during the Qing dynasty. According to Derek Clifford in Chinese Carved Lacquer, London, 1992, p. 131, there are eleven examples of this kind in the palace Museum in Beijing, and four in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
