A carved cinnabar lacquer circular box and cover

Qianlong
The domed cover crisply carved with a circular panel of five bats surrounding a shou medallion, against a ground of meticulously rendered churning waves, the rounded sides of the cover and box carved with a band of scattered floral and fruit medallions on a honeycomb diaper ground, sandwiched between bands of key-fret, the base and interior lacquered black.

Footnotes

Depicting bats, fish, dragons and lions against a ground of churning waves was a popular motif during the Qing dynasty. According to Derek Clifford in Chinese Carved Lacquer, London, 1992, p. 131, there are eleven examples of this kind in the palace Museum in Beijing, and four in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
