Footnotes

Provenance:
Gerard Hordijk, and his son by descent.
Private Dutch collection.

Hordijk was a Dutch artist who died in Amsterdam in 1958, but who latterly lived in a house in Westchester County, New York. The present painting (along with Hordijk's possessions, his paintings, and letters addressed to him from Piet Mondrian) was recovered from the house, which belonged to his son and daughter-in-law, before it was demolished. Hordijk lived and worked in Paris from 1927 until 1935 and it is likely that on a return visit to Paris he acquired the painting directly from Selim. Jewad Selim was sent to Paris in 1938 (the year of the present lot) to study sculpture at the Institut des Beaux Arts. An oil by Selim was recently sold through these rooms (Bonhams Dubai, Modern and Contemporary Arab, Iranian, Indian and Pakistani Art, lot 44).
