Footnotes

Chairs of this type were made in 19th Century Spain during a period of Moorish revival. They are based on Nasrid originals of the 14th/ 15th Century, examples of which can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Otto Kurtz, "Folding Chairs and Koran Stands" in Richard Ettinghausen (ed.), Islamic Art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York, 1972, pp. 299-314, in particular p. 305); and in the Alhambra, Granada (Art Islamico en Granada, exhibition catalogue, Granada, 1995, pp. 436-7, no. 188). For two 19th Century examples similar to the present lot, see Maria Paz Aquilo Alonzo, El Mueble en Espana, siglos XVI-XVII, Madrid, 1993, p. 351, no. 309, both of which have the Nasrid coat of arms on their backs.

The inscription is a copy of a Nasrid inscription.
