A parquetry Console Table and Mirror
Egypt, circa 1920

the upper half consisting or an arch-shaped mirror with a carved wooden surround inlaid with various exotic materials, two bands of decoration to either side of the mirror contain trailing bands of foliate motifs above turned and banded columns, the mirror surmounted by a band of inlaid Arabic script and a series of stepped crenellations, the table consists of two drawers inlaid with Arabic inscription above a double notched inlaid archway, supported by three turned and banded legs on a pedestal base, the backboard with inlaid scrolling palmettes and split-palmettes around two circular cartouches of inlaid geometric decoration

Footnotes

The inscriptions in the cartouches include benedictory terms and verses from the Qur'an surah al-saff, LXI, parts of thirteen; the inscription above the mirror is a proverb relating to the mirror.
