A Qajar carved wooden Doorway
Persia, 19th Century

the wooden surround of rectangular form with cusped arched upper section, the upper panel carved in relief with scrolling floral and foliate vines, the rectangular section below the latter with an inscription-filled cartouche, the sides carved with stylised columns, the lower section with two square sections bearing flowerheads within quatrefoil motifs, the door mounted with a mirror etched with a central floral spray issuing from a vase, surrounded by inscriptions, all within a floral border, at each junction an inscription-filled roundel
195 x 102 cm.

Footnotes

The inscriptions include a prayer and the names: God, Muhammad, 'Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Husayn; the nada 'ali quatrian, 'there is no youth (as brave as) 'Ali, no sword (as sharp as) dhu'l-faqar'; and invocations to God.
