Footnotes
Such panels, known as messandra, were made in sets of five or seven and were used to decorated the main reception room (onda) of country houses in the western Ottoman provinces of Northern Greece. The motifs are traditional and appear in prosperous merchant houses of the period from Greece, Turkey and Syria.
For other examples and a discussion on such houses, see Dimitris Philippides, Greek Design and Decoration: Three Centuries of Architectural Style, Athens, 2003, p. 53, the Manousis mansion, Kastoria and p.192, the Aivazis mansion, Kastoria.
