Footnotes
Two marble turbans, although of more compressed form, but with floral decoration were sold at Sotheby's (Arts of the Islamic World, 18th April 2007, lots 196-97). Turbans of this type formed the finials of funerary steles in Ottoman Turkey. The rose decoration indicates that it was the stele of a woman rather than a man. For further information and diagrams of steles, see Frederic Hitzel, L'Empire Ottoman XVe - XVIIIe siecles, Paris, 2002, pp. 142-45.
