Footnotes
In order to form the mosaic panel, the fragments would first have been cut out of monochrome glazed pottery slabs and then assembled to form the decorative components. Tile mosaic was an extremely time-consuming technique and was very popular in this period. The tradition continued into the Safavid period, although Shah 'Abbas' impatience to see his religious monuments completed encouraged the greater use of the faster cuerda seca technique. For further information on this technique, see Venetia Porter, Islamic Tiles, London, 1995, pp. 65-76.
