A large Ilkhanid lustre moulded pottery Tile
Persia, 13th Century

rectangular, decorated in a brownish lustre and cobalt blue on a white ground, moulded in relief with a wide band of thuluth inscription reserved on a ground of leafy tendrils, the upper border moulded with arabesque interlace, the lower edge with a narrow band of stylised foliate decoration
39 x 36.5 cm. max.

Footnotes

The inscription seems to come from the Qur'an, surah Taha (XX), 94.

This tile is almost identical to the tiles embellishing the shrine at Mashad, some of which are dated to AH 612/ AD 1215, see, Venetia Porter, Islamic Tiles, London, 1995, no. 43.
