A Khorasan copper inlaid bronze Bucket
Persia 12th Century

of bulbous form with flattened rim and swing handle, supported on a splayed foot with kufic inscribed band, the body with four bands of incised and inlaid decoration, the upper band featuring kufic script divided by circular motifs with birds in the centres, below eight roundels containing seated figures interspersed with cruciform knotted motifs and fantastic beasts, below a narrow band of kufic inscription divided by segmented circles, this above a continuous frieze of trefoil archways, the rim with further kufic inscription and segmented circles, the handle with figural terminals
22 cm. diam.

Footnotes

The inscription on the rim in kufic consists of : "With Good-fortune and Blessing and Joy and Happiness and Long-life to its owner"; and around the shoulder in cursive, "Glory and Prosperity and Wealth and Long-life to its owner" and signed as, "Work of Abu Bakr al-Haravi"; around the body in kufic,"With Good-fortune and Blessing and Plenitude and Joy and turn of Good-fortune and Happiness .. [and] Ease and (God's) Mercy and Perpetuity and Plenitude (God's Support and Success and giving Victory and Health and ....Power and Strength to its owner"; and around the base in kufic, a repetition of a few words including "Blessing".
