Footnotes
Although it has not been possible to find an exact parallel for this piece, the openwork decoration can be compared to that seen on a Samanid slip-painted pottery dish in the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington D.C (Esin Atil, Ceramics from the World of Islam Washington D.C., 1973, no. 12). The similarity of the design of this basin with the Freer dish is not surprising since ceramics are often based on metal prototypes.
