7th/ 8th Century

with cylindrical body on three slightly pointing feet, the cylindrical neck with tall curving spout, a small thumb piece on the handle
27.1 cm. high

Footnotes

This monochrome pottery ewer belongs to a group described by Oliver Watson as 'Early green glazed Wares' (see Oliver Watson, Ceramics from Islamic Lands, London, 2004, chapter B), representing the 'longest-lasting tradition of glazing in the Middle East'. The majority of the glazed pottery from this period inherit their forms from earlier classical and Parthian traditions. In this case, most of the ewer is of a classical form, apart from the curved spout giving it a distinctly 'Islamic' feel.
