Balarama coming to the aid of Krishna on an elephant, accompanied by foot soldiers and horsemen
Pahari, circa 1860

gouache on paper, floral inner border, pink outer border with inscription at top in nagari script, at bottom in English Bal Bhadr came to offer an aid to Sri Krishna and an explanatory inscription in Urdu lower right, in mount
205 x 293 mm.

Footnotes

The subject depicted concerns Balarama coming to help his half brother Krishna, as explained in the Urdu inscription, which also denotes the picture as 'number 14', apparently the verse number of the text being illustrated. The Sawaiya at the top (a type of Hindi verse of four lines, here written in two) is in Gurmukhi script. The text evidently described the event and would have been taken from a vernacular version of the Bhagavata Purana or a set of devotional verses relating to the Krishna Lila.
