Note:
This small sketch in oils provides a pleasing study of sailing vessels rounding a distant headland. Those on the left are running before a favorable wind and include as the main subject, a third-rate man-of-war followed by a line of square rigged merchant vessels. On the right, a line of fore-and-aft rigged craft (possibly yachts) are shown 'plugging to winward' close hauled under close reefed mainsails; a schooner in a the middle foreground, with several cutters further to seaward. Tucked in behind the headland and particularly sheltered from the offshore wind are several square riggers, probably awaiting a favorable tide.
