A cased 12 gauge J. Purdey bar-in-wood hammer gun

Serial no. 9097 for 1874, 12 gauge. The 30 inch brown Damascus barrels with concave rib signed J. Purdey 314 1/2 Oxford Street, London. Finely scroll-engraved action and locks. Rebounding bar action locks inletted into stock. Blued triggerguard and thumb lever, the former marked Patented Safety. Straight checkered buttstock of figured walnut with drop points and oval silver escutcheon engraved with the monogram JWH. Checkered, wedge-fastened splinter fore-end. With associated oak and leather case, the lid stamped Harry Allen/Sheffield. Interior relined in green baize, the lid with period Purdey trade label. With later accessories including, cleaning rod, screwdriver and gold-plated oiler. With Purdey factory letter.
Condition: Excellent as redone. Minor wear to rebrowned barrels with some small areas of light pitting. Bright bores showing light scratches and some minor pitting, right bore with slight enlargement at mid-point. Locks and action showing sharp engraving. Triggerguard and buttplate with 85-90% reblued finish. Refinished wood showing scattered light marks, the checkering refreshed. Case exterior showing staining and scattered marks. Label with stains and some losses.
