A prison-made tooled leather western saddle owned by Santa Fe artist Helmuth Naumer
attributed to the New Mexico penitentiary at Santa Fe, circa 1935-45

The tan leather saddle with rounded skirts and tooled overall with a design of large blossoms and scrolling leaves incorporating panel scenes of bronc busters on the fenders and a steerhead and horsehead on the left and right sides of the rounded shoulders.
Condition: Showing scuffing, wear and small tear at right side of cantle.

Note: Helmuth Naumer, a well-known southwestern landscape painter, settled in Santa Fe in 1932. He was a member of the Santa Fe Sheriff's Posse throughout the 1940s.
