A U.S. Geological Survey canteen

The tin canteen with pewter spout and iron suspension rings with original khaki covering, the front stenciled U.S.G.S. Reverse with old inked inscription in script: Geo G Meade/ Major General/ Grand Canyon/ Exposition/1815-1872
Condition: Covering showing fading and water stains.

Footnotes

Note: The U.S. Geological Survey was founded in 1879. The Survey is known to have used US surplus military equipment and the canteen is a Model 1858 smoothside. The mistaken attribution to Major General Meade on the reverse is possibly a muddled reference to Major John Wesley Powell who led two expeditions to the Grand Canyon in 1869 and 1871-72. Major Powell served as the second Director of the Survey from 1881 to 1894.
