Footnotes
Note: See Figure 702 in American Military Headgear Insignia by Duncan J. Campbell and Michael J. O'Donnell for an illustration of this style of plate. Lack of the hunting horn and 'M' insignia it is assumed that this plate was unissued and sold as military surplus after the Civil War. The shako is one of 10,000 examples purchased by the Federal government from a French manufacturer at the beginning of the war. These were found generally to be unsatisfactory and most were sold as surplus.
