An English flintlock officers fusil with the crest and motto of Forbes of Newe
third quarter 18th century

The 40 inch two-stage barrel in .69 caliber smoothbore. Silver fore-sight in x-shaped silver setting. Round fore section above a molded girdle and faceted breech. Sighted and engraved tang, the front panel fluted and beaded. Gold-filled touch hole and pan. Engraved lockplate with chamfered rim, stepped tail and signed Lawrence. Pan spring with acorn finial. Finely chased and pierced steel sideplate incorporating scrolls and florals. Engraved blued steel triggerguard. Engraved buttplate. Wrist with steel escutcheon surmounted by a shell and engraved with the crest and motto of Forbes of Newe. Full varnished walnut stock, the fore-end of two pieces. Rear of lock and sideplate panels relief-engraved with palmettes. Barrel tang enclosed by relief-carved scrollwork with large palmette terminal. Wrist below escutcheon carved with an asymmetrical leaf scroll.
Condition: Very good. Barrel with dark brown patina and fine rust patination overall obscuring the maker's signature. Lock with grey/brown patina showings some minor pitting. Sideplate showing minor spotting and traces of blued finish. Triggerguard with some blue finish remaining and with areas of spotting overall. Buttplate with some rust patination. Wood showing numerous light marks, worn slivered losses on either side of breech and 2" x 1/8" sliver missing to left side of tip of fore-end.
