A French flintlock blunderbuss pistol by J. Cazes of Toulouse
late 18th/early 19th century

The 5 1/4 inch steel blunderbuss barrel, the faceted breech section with punched and engraved decoration retaining traces of gilding and struck with three gilt maker's marks in the form of a fleur-de-lys flanked by the maker's initials. Rounded lockplate signed Cazes/A Toulouse. Unengraved steel furniture, the triggerguard with urn finial. Full walnut stock inlaid with silver wire framing the spurred buttcap and with elaborate scrollwork incorporating small engraved leaves behind the barrel tang.. Ramrod missing.
Condition: Very good. Metal with dark grey patina showing minor pitting. Barrel retains traces of gilt decoration. Wood with scattered light marks, right fore-end with old repaired crack and some small filled areas.
