An early Scottish powder horn from the Charles E. Whitelaw Collection with volume
late 17th or early 18th century

Of translucent brown cow horn, the 10 3/4 inch horn of flattened section with beveled edges. One side incised DMD, the reverse IS. Inner rim carved with suspension hole below the spout. Flat wooden plug secured by wooden pins. One end of plug pierced for suspension cord. Retaining copper collection label marked C.E. Whitelaw/559/Glasgow. Together with a copy Mr. Whitelaw's book Scottish Arms Makers, which was completed after his death by Sarah Barter, et al.
Condition: One side showing area of chipping and cracking. One end slightly deformed and pulling away from plug.
