An early silver-mounted Scottish all steel flintlock pistol by Thomas Caddell
Doune, circa 1715

Tapered, round 10 3/4 inch two-stage .60 caliber barrel with banded muzzle. Front stage inlaid with two broad silver bands. Upper flats of faceted breech stage with oval silver inlays. Lockplate signed Thos. Caddel. Cock with perforated Highland spur. Steel stock with scroll-engraved and punched decoration with inlaid silver highlights comprising: sides of the grips with 'Doune' stars, circles and scrolls; wrist with four engraved silver panels above a heart and a plant form; right side of fore-end inlaid with 'everlasting knot' design flanked by engraved panels; underside with rectangular and chevron-shaped panels. Left side set with steel belthook with pierced finial. Brass ball triggers. Ram's horn butt. Steel ramrod. Together with a copy of Dispatch, the Journal of the Scottish Military Collectors Society, containing an article about this particular pistol.
Condition: Very good. Grey metal showing areas of pitting and some minor losses to silver inlay.
