An Italian miquelet belt pistol
probably second half 17th century

With 13 3/4 inch .62 caliber two-stage barrel, the breech inscribed Lazari Cominaz. Flat, unmarked lockplate with trefoil finials at either end. Iron triggerguard with broad bow engraved with leaves and fluting, the narrow tail with scrolling finial. Ribbed and fluted iron fore-end band and ramrod thimble. Upper and lower rims of the thimble with acanthus leaves, this motif repeated on the stock. Rear counterscrew fitted with 6 inch iron belthook. Full stock of wheel-lock form, Underside of stock with two relief-carved chevron-shaped bands of leafage in front of the triggerguard and a single band with beaded border below the ramrod shaft. Grip of octagonal section, the flared butt encircled by an fluted iron band. Ramrod with pierced iron tip.
Condition: Very good. Grey metal showing areas of light pitting. Stock with scattered light marks, right front of fore-end with two hairline cracks and some chipping around pin. Butt inlet for an escutcheon, now missing.
