An Italian snaphaunce belt pistol
early 18th century

Tapered 13 3/4 inch two-stage barrel in .50 caliber, the breech section with worn signature. Border and scroll-engraved snaphaunce lock, the cock chiseled with grotesque masks. Steel furniture, the pierced counterplate with mask-headed scrolls; triggerguard with urn finial; buttcap with mask framed by petals. Full stock relief-carved with simple panels, the fore-end with bulbous scrolls. Wrist with pierced steel escutcheon incorporating a crown and monster heads.
Condition: Very good. Metal showing heavy cleaning with wear and areas of scattered pitting. Stock with numerous light marks and some chipping at fore-end.
