A rare wheel-lock petronel
probably south German, early 17th century

The 26 1/4 inch barrel in .44 caliber smoothbore, the front 7 inches hexagonal, the rear section octagonal. Breech inscribed F/P. Lock with partially sunken wheel with domed steel cover. Dog, pan, safety and spring finial engraved with foliage. Interior components also engraved with foliage. Steel triggerguard. 6 inch steel belthook with yoke-shaped base. Ivory banded stock extending to 5 1/2 inches from muzzle and inlaid with incised ivory panels in the form of leaves and floral meander. Slightly curved buttstock of octagonal section, the conforming steel butt with hinged trap. With modern red velour-lined wooden case.
Condition: Grey metal showing minor pitting and sharp engraving. Stock with later coat of varnish, scattered minor marks and crack extending from tail of lock to butt. Brass-tipped ramrod probably later.

Saleroom notices

Please note that the inlays are of staghorn and not ivory. Please note also that the barrel extension at the muzzle is removable, and the butt trap is fitted to hold this extension. This is a very unusual, if not unique feature.
