An American half-stock percussion rifle
mid-19th century

Heavy 34 1/4 inch octagonal barrel with six groove rifling in .44 caliber. Unmarked lock showing slight traces of engraved decoration. Double set triggers. Brass triggerguard, buttplate and pierced sideplate. Varnished walnut half-stock with pewter fore-end cap. Large, oval German silver barrel pin escutcheons. Buttstock inlaid with German silver panels in the form of arrows on either side of the wrist, with a larger arrow on the comb, several small inlays and with oval German silver escutcheons on either side.
Condition: Very good. Barrel lightly cleaned to smooth grey metal, the tang pierced for a peep sight, now missing. Lock possibly an old replacement. Furniture and inlays showing remains of old lacquered finish. Sound, clean wood, probably re-varnished.
