Footnotes

Note: One of 50 Model 1886 rifles inscribed Arapahoe County and ordered in 1894 by Arapahoe County Sheriff William K. Burchinell during the City Hall War of 1894. In late 1893 Governor Davis Waite had come into conflict with his appointees to the Denver police and fire boards. In March of 1894, after the governor threatened to fire the board members, most of the Denver city government and the entire Denver police force and Arapahoe County Sheriffs Department barricaded themselves in City Hall and prepared for battle. The governor called out the state militia to storm City Hall but on March 25th the state court ruled that the governor had the legal right to remove the board members but not to call out the militia. Sheriff Burchinell was afraid there might be another confrontation and he ordered the rifles from Winchester at that time. They were shipped from the factory on July 14, 1894.
