An unusual single shot pistol in the Renwick Double Ender style

Serial no. 18, .44 caliber. 2 3/4 inch pivoting barrel of squared form and fitted with two brass fore-sights. Top engraved with leafage and inscribed Double Ender/E.S. Renwick/Manfr/New York/Patent June 21 1864. Sides of barrel engraved with blossom and leafage design. Action engraved with leafy scrollwork. Elephant ivory grips.
Condition: Fine. Smooth grey metal showing traces of thin blue finish.

Note: It is estimated that less than 25 examples were manufactured of this unusual pistol. The pivoting barrel is made to be loaded at either end for faster reloading. See Section of Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms where the author notes that all existing specimens shows variations in design. Origins of present example unknown.
