A scarce U.S. Navy boarding axe
circa 1800-20

The blade of typical form with two notches in the lower edge and marked on one side U.S./N.Y.W./J.T. for the Navy Yard Washington, J.T. being the inspector's initials. 2 inch poll of rectangular section flaring at the end to a flattened peen. Original 23 inch haft with ball finial. Haft incised between the side straps S.V.
Condition: Metal with dark brown patina, areas of light pitting and clear markings. Clean wood with scattered light marks and some hairline cracks at ball.
