A silver-mounted Highland dirk marked John McDonald
second half 18th century

The 13 1/2 inch single edged blade from a cut-down regimental back sword blade by Jeffries and marked with GR cipher and crown. Grip carved with Celtic interlace. Silver bolster with double line border. Side reinforcement panels engraved with leafage, the uppermost wider than the lower. Flat silver pommel cap with ball capstan, the rim fluted, the top inscribed John McDonald and struck with spurious hallmarks. Retaining the original silver-mounted black leather scabbard. Scabbard retains the original silver-mounted knife, the fork of the period but possibly not original to the set.
Condition: Blade showing some wear from cleaning and sharpening. Hilt fine. Scabbard scuffed but very sound. Grips of both utility items cracked above the bolsters.
