An early Highland baskethilted broadsword
hilt early 18th century, blade mid-17th century

The 34 inch double edged blade from a Walloon sword with running wolf mark on both sides, the 7 inch fullers marked SAHAGOM, below the hilt the Amsterdam city mark. Steel hilt comprised of squared bars and panels with cusped rims and pierced with hearts and circles. Side panels and main knucklebow further decorated with banding and fluting. Squat, conical pommel decorated with three flutes flanked by narrow bands. Wooden grip retaining twisted copper wire wrapping.
Condition: Dark grey patina, the blade showing some light pitting, the hilt showing heavier pitting.
