A fine Victorian baskethilted officers broadsword for the Black Watch

Straight 32 3/4 inch double edged blade with 21 inch panel on each side finely etched and engraved with a dense design of thistles and scrollwork, one side with a shield containing the Royal cipher, the reverse incorporating a panoply of weapons above the regimental badge. Maker marked above the ricasso E Sabell/Maker/Birmingham. Steel hilt comprised of rounded bars and four side panels chiseled and pierced with thistle plants. Main knuckleguard panel scratched overall and showing slight traces of an inscription that has been removed. Spirally fluted grip covered in fishskin wrapped with three strands of twisted silver wire. Retaining the original silk tassel and red and buff wool liner.
Condition: Blade showing sharp decoration with some small spots of staining. Hilt with dark patina showing some minor pitting. Grip wrapping excellent.
