A Highland baskethilted broadsword for an officer of the Black Watch
hilt mid-18th century, the blade probably earlier

The 31 5/8 inch double edged blade with 9 1/2 inch central fuller above the hilt and stamped on both sides XX I N(reversed) XX M E N(reversed) E X and surmounted by a mark in the form of a hooked cross. Iron hilt of 1765 regimental pattern composed of flattened bars and panels pierced with circles and triangles. Tall conical pommel incised with three lines. Spirally fluted grip covered in fishskin and single strand of twisted silver wire.
Condition: Blade showing dark patina with scattered patches of light pitting. Fuller markings on one side partially obscured by pitting. Hilt with mottled grey metal showing some light pitting. Grip wrapping excellent.
