A Highland baskethilted broadsword, claidheamh mor
hilt, second quarter 18th century, blade second half 17th century

Broad, tapering 30 1/2 inch blade having three 7 inch fullers below a cross and orb mark, the latter on one side retaining traces of copper inlay. Ricasso with deep fullers on each side. Steel hilt comprising of bars of squared section with saltire- and side panels pierced with circles and shaped hearts; wristguard with broad, scrolled finial; conical pommel incised with three sets of three shallow lines and marked /56. Ebonized wooden grip.
Condition: Blade showing areas of pitting, nicks to edge and rounded point. Hilt with scattered marks and areas of light pitting. Grip with light marks and appears to be original.
