A continental clamshell cutlass
probably German, early 17th century

Slightly curved 29 inch single edged blade having a clipped point and two nearly full-length fullers below the spine. One side marked midway with two rows of three circles enclosing two orbs and a third worn stamp. Steel guard comprising a large, well-shaped clamshell guard; knucklebow and downcurving quillon with flared finials fluted on the outer sides; inner ring and thumb ring. Grip wrapped in plaited steel wire with wire Turk's heads. Large pommel en suite with outer side fluted.
Condition: Grey metal showing areas of pitting. Grip re-wrapped.
