An ivory-mounted Indian elephant goad, ancus
probably 18th century

Having a 3 1/4 inch top spike, the hook with zoomorphic finial. Haft with staggered elephant ivory scales with simple punched dot and line decoration, the lowermost terminating in a ball finial.
Condition: Metal with dark patina showing light pitting, the tip of the hook slightly bent. Haft scales showing considerable age barking, one of the lower pieces cracked through and missing two large chips.
