ROOSEVELT APPROVES CHEROKEE NATION LEGISLATION.
Document Signed (“T. Roosevelt”), 1 p, 4to, Washington, September 6, 1902, approving an Act of the National Council of the Cherokee Nation passed at extra session, 1902, also signed by T.M. Buffington as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, with Cherokee Nation blind stamp, page creased with moderate age toning. Together with Typed Document Signed of Buffington and others, 4 pp, folio, Tahlequah, Indian Territory, August 15, 1902, being “Senate Bill No. 4 / An act making an appropriation to pay the current and contingent expenses of the National Council convened in extraordinary session on the eleventh day of August,” 1902, leaves toned and creased, all documents matted and framed together in double sided, hinged frame to 44 ½ by 21 inches overall.
In this document the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation submits his nation’s legislation to Roosevelt as President for approval. Interestingly, Roosevelt has had someone cross out (with a typewriter) the words “Executive Mansion” above his signature, and type in “White House.” Roosevelt popularized the term “White House” over “Executive Mansion,” a designation he found elitist.
