The Garden Behind the Moon. New York: 1895. 8vo. Original decorated green cloth. Mild age-toning to leaves, spine slightly cocked, cloth lightly soiled, shelfwear.

First edition, signed and inscribed by the author on blank preliminary leaf: “To Eugene Field / My fellow worker in the world of Art / Howard Pyle / For as the spoken word is like a breath of wind that maybe stirs the world around to agitation that soon is still again, so is the written word like a stone of rock cut out from the bosom of humanity, to endure for generations and for ages … November 3rd, 1895.” Together with Autograph Letter Signed (“Howard Pyle”), 2 pp, 8vo (conjoining leaves), Wilmington, DE, November 10, 1895, to Mrs. Eugene Field, expressing shock and sympathy at Field’s sudden death, and sending along the above book which was inscribed before news reached Pyle.
