Autograph Letter Signed (“Rembrandt Peale”), 1 p, 4to, New York, June 20, 1857, to G. P. Putnam, authenticating a miniature of Washington painted by his father, with conjoined blank leaf docketed on verso, leaves creased horizontally and vertically, unevenly toned, tipped to mount at hinge.
The son of painter Charles Willson Peale, Rembrandt Peale inherited his father’s mantle as the premier Philadelphia portraitist of his day. He is best remembered for his 1805 portrait of Thomas Jefferson. In this letter to publishing magnate G.P. Putnam, Peale clarifies the attribution of a Washington miniature. In part: "I recognize in the miniature you submitted to my inspection the unmistakable evidence of my father’s pencil & colouring. Now, as the first Portrait of Washington was painted by my father at Mount Vernon in 1772, as Colonel of the Alexandria Militia, in Blue with Red facings; and though my father also painted some miniatures, (possibly one of Washington); yet, if so, the costume could not have been Blue & Buff, and must have been altered subsequently, which is not probable. I conclude & am of the opinion that this is the miniature my father painted for Mr. Washington in the New Jersey Farm House, when the news was received of Burgoyne’s defeat.”
