FILLMORE, MILLARD. 1800-1874.

Letter Signed (“Millard Fillmore”), 1 p, Albany, NY, November 9, 1848, to G.C. Verplanck, regarding financing fever hospitals, leaf creased, very mildly toned, otherwise fine.

Fillmore writes this letter as Comptroller of the state of New York, announcing that money has been allocated to build hospital, possibly including the famed Smallpox Hospital at the southernmost tip of Blackwell’s (now Roosevelt’s) Island. In part: “I have this day forwarded to the Hon A.L. Jordon, Atty Gen, for his signature, an order granting ten thousand dollars of the commutation money to be used for the support of the small pox and fever hospitals on Staten Island.”
