POTSDAM CONFERENCE: SEATING PLAN AND PROGRAM OF MUSIC FOR DINNER AT “10 DOWNING STREET, POTSDAM.”
Printed Card Signed by WINSTON S. CHURCHILL, JOSEF STALIN, HARRY S. TRUMAN, ANTHONY EDEN, CLEMENT ATLEE, BERNARD MONTGOMERY, V.M. MOLOTOV, JAMES F. BYRNES, ANDREW CUNNINGHAM, ALAN BROOKE, and others, 8 by 11 inch bifoliate card, Potsdam, July 23, 1945, containing the seating plan and music program for a dinner thrown by Churchill, leaves age toned, some wear to fold, a few signatures smudged.
The last major allied conference of World War II took place at Potsdam, outside of Berlin, in July of 1945. Truman made his first appearance at an allied conference, having strengthened his bargaining position with Stalin by delaying the conference until after the new atomic bomb had been tested. Although the war with Japan was still in progress, most of the business of the Potsdam Conference was concerned with the reconstruction of Europe.
On July 23, Churchill hosted this dinner party for the Postdam attendees; just three days later his Conservative Party was voted out of office and he was replaced as Prime Minister by Labour Party chief (and conference attendee) Clement Atlee.
Provenance: The Estate of General H.H. “Hap” Arnold.
See illustration.
