BURBANK, ELBRIDGE AYER. 1858-1949.

Conte crayon on paper, 21⅞ by 14 inches, signed (“E.A. BURBANK”), 1898, titled “Holds-The-Enemy, Crow,” Crow Agency, Montana, matted and framed, toning to verso and briefly to recto, corners rubbed, excellent.

E. A. Burbank was commissioned by his uncle Edward Ayer, first president of the Field Columbian Museum, to paint portraits of the great Indian leaders of his day. Eventually, Burbank would paint over 1200 Indian portraits. The above piece was re-drawn for presentation a year after the original. A printed note on the lower left states: “Presented to Otonkah Tribe, No. 56, Imp’d O.R.M. / By / Past Great Sachem Henry C. Gesford.”
