[JACOBITE REBELLION OF 1745.]

Letter Signed of Sir Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle, 3 pp recto and verso, folio (conjoining leaves), Whitehall, September 21, 1745, to Lord Viscount Irwin, relaying the news that Jacobite Rebels have taken possession of Edinburgh, leaves creased horizontally and vertically, age-toned, clipped dealer’s description laid down to p 4.

An interesting letter from a future British Prime Minister reporting on the advances of the Scottish Rebels in support of Bonnie Prince Charlie: In part: “We had last Night a certain account of the Rebels having taken Possession of Edinburgh, at the very time, that Sir John Cope was landing with the King’s Troops at Dunbar, within less than Twenty Miles of that Place. However as he will have been immediately joined by Two Regiments of Dragoons; and will before this Time, we conclude, have had the Reinforcement of a Dutch Regiment, which has been seen off Tinmouth, in it’s way to join Him; We are in the greatest Hopes, That he will have been strong enough effectually to prevent the father Progress of the Rebels.”
