[SANDBURG, CARL.]

OLIVER BARRETT’S COPIES OF “VANITY FAIR,” WITH SANDBURG’S NOTES LAID IN.
Vanity Fair. Vols II-VII (January 5, 1861 to July 4, 1863). Bound in 5 volumes, 4 in half calf over marbled boards, 5th in leatherette. Wear to spines with some loss to all volumes.

Oliver Barrett’s copies, with “Barrett” and “ORB” to front free endpapers; with additional manuscript notes by Carl Sandburg laid in throughout text. While Sandburg was writing the second part of his Lincoln biography, Abraham Lincoln: The War Years, he made liberal use of Oliver Barrett’s collection of books and manuscripts relating to Lincoln, including this set of bound copies of the first Vanity Fair, a New York based periodical financed by Frank J. Thompson published from 1859-1863. Sandburg has marked passages of interest and illustrations to be reproduced in his own work; present also are offprints of the reproduced illustrations from the biography.
