SANDBURG, CARL.

Abraham Lincoln: The War Years. New York: 1939. 4 volumes. 4to. Brown buckram, with maroon labels to spines. In slipcase. Light shelfwear to slipcase, otherwise very fine.

Limited edition of 525, author’s copy, inscribed to Roger Barrett on colophon page: “You have seen and understood how many parts of this book were made in company with your father and his amateur but important archives—and on occasion you served as mascot—so here are prayers and the deep wish that time and the overhead stars be kind to you. / Carl Sandburg / 1940.” Together with Autograph Letter Signed (“Carl Sandburg”), 1 p, 8vo, n.p., September 5, 1945, to Oliver Barrett, quoting a letter from Harry S. Truman, letter unevenly toned. A proud Sandburg sends this Truman quote on to his friend Barrett: “When I read The War Years in haunts made holy by memories of Lincoln, I shall often be reminded of the ‘White House loneliness and laughter’ which you mention with such feeling.” Present also is a TLS of Illinois Governor and Barrett friend Henry Horner.
