SANDBURG, CARL. 1878-1967.

AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT OF “THE FOG.”
Autograph Manuscript Signed (“Carl Sandburg”), 1 p, 8vo, Chicago, 1933, being a copy of his poem “Fog,” inscribed to Roger Barrett, with conjoined blank leaf, mounting remnants to verso of blank leaf, otherwise very fine.

Sandburg copies out the text of one of his most famous poems for the son of his close friend, the famous Lincoln collector Oliver Barrett. “Fog” is only six lines long, but features one of the most resonant metaphors in modern literature: “The fog comes / on little cat feet. / It sits looking / over harbor and city / on silent haunches / and then moves on.”
