MARKHAM, EDWIN. 1852-1940.

Autograph Manuscript Signed (“Edwin Markham” and “E.M.”), 2 pp, folio, n.p., April 23, 1930, being a fair copy of “The Man with the Hoe,” copied expressly for Oliver R. Barrett, leaves creased horizontally, mildly age-toned, left margins rough with mounting remnants to verso. Together with Autograph Letter Signed (“Edwin Markham”), 1 p, 4to, West New Brighton, NY, April, 1930, to Oliver R. Barrett, agreeing to send a fair copy of the “Lincoln poem,” on personal stationery, leaf creased, unevenly toned, staining to upper and right margins. Both items housed in Barrett’s custom manuscript folder featuring 5¼ by 4½ inch watercolor to upper cover, a copy of Millet’s "L'homme à la houe," signed at lower right (“G.L.”).

Poet Edwin Markham provides collector Oliver Barrett with a fair copy of his most famous poem, “The Man with the Hoe,” a work that highlights the drudgery of labor and was inspired by Jean-Francois Millet’s painting, "L'homme à la houe." In the letter accompanying this piece, Markham promises Barrett a copy of another poem about Lincoln, not present here.
